Complementary Currency Systems Bridging Communities : Proceedings of 6th Biennial RAMICS Congress, 27-29 October, 2022, University of National and World Economy, Sofia, Bulgaria
In general, countries legislations prohibit the payment of salaries or wages in amounts that are not denominated in fiat currency. This is a measure to protect the worker. In this sense, the article aims to analyze the legal alternatives available so that Municipalities and companies would pay the remuneration of their employees, or parts of these remunerations, with local currency. It will also be investigated which amounts received by employees fall within the concept of salary or not, according to Brazilian legislation. Furthermore, the legal provisions that oblige remuneration to be paid in fiat currency will be analyzed and, as an alternative, the possibility of companies and municipalities to sign contracts with their employees for the acquisition of local currencies, in which employees would voluntarily opt for the purchase of an amount of local currency with part of their salary, in exchange for incentives. Finally, practical cases will be examined in which employee remuneration is made using local currencies.
